Day One
Geraldine offers everything you need for a relaxing overnight escape, combining artisan food, boutique shopping, craft gin, scenic nature walks, and elegant accommodation.
Begin your journey with a drive to Peel Forest, one of the last remaining low-lying native podocarp forests in Canterbury and a truly stunning place to explore. Walks range from an easy 30-minute stroll to the iconic Big Tree, ideal for a gentle walk. Through to the more adventurous 4–6 hour hike to the summit of Huatakerekere/Little Mount Peel for incredible views across the region.
After working up an appetite, head to Verde Café for lunch. Set among lush gardens this relaxed and welcoming café is a local favourite. The menu celebrates fresh, seasonal produce sourced from the region, presented with a modern flair. It’s a lovely spot to unwind, enjoy a meal and coffee, and ease into the afternoon.
Spend some time wandering around Geraldine Village, browsing the boutique shops and sampling the town’s renowned artisan food products. Stop by the Geraldine Cheese Company and Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery to taste your way through cheeses, jams, chutneys and syrups. Then head to Humdinger Gin for a distillery tour and tasting. Their award-winning, handcrafted botanical gins are made onsite, and it’s a must-do for gin enthusiasts, chances are you’ll leave with a bottle (or two).
Enjoy a visit to the Geraldine Cinema, one of the few remaining cinemas of its kind in New Zealand. Instead of traditional theatre seating, you’ll find sofas and armchairs, creating a cosy, intimate atmosphere. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the latest blockbuster or an independent film in comfort.
For a drink before dinner head to the new Bonnie Day Brewery and Taproom. All made in the brewery onsite, these handcrafted beers will be your go-to drink this summer. Come in and try a tasting paddle, grab a pint or buy some beers in a can to go.
For dinner, a local favourite is House of Hop, located out in the countryside just beyond town. With rural views and friendly farm animals roaming nearby, it’s a memorable dining spot. They brew their own craft beer onsite, so settle in for a hearty meal paired with a beer tasting platter as the sun sets over the hills.
For the night, book a stay at Ngā Whare Mānatu, an unforgettable retreat set amoung native plantings on the hills behind Geraldine. The four private, individual whares offer seclusion and tranquillity, making it easy to switch off. Soak in your private hot tub under the open sky before heading inside to watch the stars through the ceiling skylights.

Day 2
Start the morning with a scrumptious breakfast at Verde Café or Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery, fuelling up for a day of discovery.
Meet your alpaca, get to know their playful personality, and then take a leisurely stroll together Winchester’s peaceful countryside. A fun and hand-on experience, discover their gentle personalities and capture spectacular photos.
Take a stroll along the iconic Caroline Bay taking in the ocean views with mountain backdrops. For a longer walk, continue along the Dashing Rocks Coastal Walk. Experience the beauty of Timaru’s coastline, enjoying panoramic views over Caroline Bay, wandering over ancient lava flows and examining the rocky cliffs that proved treacherous to early shipping.
Head into the city centre to explore The Exchange, where you can browse fashion boutiques, homeware stores, and specialty shops. Discover the galleries along Stafford Street and take time to admire the vibrant street art that brings colour and creativity to the city.
For lunch, enjoy a tapas-style dining experience at Saikou, an Asian fusion restaurant with a busy, vibrant bar atmosphere. The mouth-watering dishes are designed to be shared, making it the perfect opportunity to sample a range of flavours together.
Alternatively head to Street Food Kitchen for an all around the worlding dining experience. Enjoy Mexican, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines all in one place.
For an afternoon indulgence, treat yourselves at Millie Rose Boutique, where you’ll find beautifully crafted designer cupcakes, loaded brownies, and specialty drinks from Millie’s Coffee Bar.

At dusk head down to Marine Parade at Caroline Bay to see Timaru’s most popular attraction, the little penguins. From the pathway, watch as they swim ashore and waddle up the beach, a fantastic way to end the day.

Day 3
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the bay at Pier 64 or The Bay Hill Bar & Restaurant. Both with large breakfast menus there will be something you fancy from the classic eggs and big breakfast to pancakes and waffles.
One of Timaru’s standout experiences is The Raptor Experience. Learn about the lives of our native raptor birds in an engaging and hands-on session. Under expert guidance, you’ll have the opportunity to handle a raptor yourself!
To make the most of the day, head out for a walk along the Tūhawaiki (Jack’s) Point Track. This scenic 1 hour coastal walk takes you right alongside the coastline and leading to the historic Tūhawaiki (Jack’s) Point Lighthouse. It’s a peaceful and refreshing way to start stretch the legs before the journey home.
Stop by a local café for lunch, popular favourites include Mrs M’s, Sopheze, Curbside Toastie, Coffee Culture, and Arthur Street Kitchen.
