3 great places to find good beer in Timaru District

Speight’s Ale House

Look no further than the historic 133-year-old Landing Service Building in the heart of Timaru for a range of award-winning southern ales and beers. The Speight’s Ale House on George Street is a great place to sample from their range.

Try out our locally brewed craft beers from Ship Hop Brewery when on tap.

For something with a bit more heritage, try the Speight’s Porter, a brew that dates back to 1929. They say this beer has a complex, smoky and rich coffee aroma and a flavor resembling a blend of crystal, caramalt, roasted wheat and chocolate malt. Sounds ideal for a chilly evening indoors.

Speight’s Ale House, 2 George Street, is open seven days from 11.30am till late.

The Grosvenor

At the Grosvenor, you’ll also drink your beer within a historic building of note. This time it’s an historic building dating back to 1875.

And this time, you’ll have access to a range of craft beers, including an ever-changing line up beers from the Australia (the Mountain Goat range is popular), New Zealand (Galbraiths) and the United Kingdom (Redemption beers).

The Grosvenor, 26 Cains Street, is open seven days.

The Oxford Restaurant and Brassiere

The Oxford is a venue that takes its beverages very seriously. In fact, it has a whole menu devoted to drinks, ranging from Waiwera sparkling water to Jose Cuervo Especial Tequila to bottled and tap beer.

For craft beer lovers, there’s a broad range of local and international beers in stock.

Expect to find a solid New Zealand offering, including the Harrington’s Organic Rogue Hop Pilsner, beers from the Emerson’s range (the IPA, the London Porter, Pilsner and the Bird Dog IPA), Garage Project beers and a pale ale from Geraldine.

It doesn't stop there. At the Oxford you can imbibe a Little Creatures Pale Ale, craft beers from the United States and a yummy-sounding IPA from Scotland called the Brewdog Punk. You'll need to pace yourself.

The Oxford, corner George and Stafford Streets, is open 11am till late weekdays and 9.30am till late on weekends. They’re closed on Tuesdays.
