Meet in Geraldine

Popular with visitors, Geraldine is a charming boutique village just 30 minutes drive from Timaru City and 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch.

It’s home to (amongst other things) fabulous eateries, scenic walking tracks, day spas, artists in galleries, stargazing and a new gin distillery.

It’s the perfect midway place to meet your friends and whānau from across the South Island, plus we have direct daily flights from Wellington for our North Island mates.

TASTE

Geraldine is home to a range of innovative food producers.

It’s a great place to stock up on foodie goodness on your South Island travels.

Try before you buy, by sampling the amazing cheese at Geraldine Cheese Co., and take a gin tasting at Humdinger Distillery

Get hands-on and experiment with the products and flavours at the interactive tasting stations at Barker’s Foodstore and Eatery.

The Running Duck is the home of Al’s Laboratory hot sauces.  They are hot, ridiculously hot even, but not pointlessly hot.

If craft beer is your thing try the local variety at Valley Brewing Company and pop into Cafe Verde to try their range.

STROLL

The best way to experience Geraldine is to walk, shop and eat your way around  the village.

Family on Riverside Walkway

The Riverside Walkway follows the Waihi River, through to Talbot Forest - a native bush reserve with tiny native bats nesting in the trees - and back around to take in the eateries and shops on the main street.

A project is underway to turn the Riverside Walkway into an amazing nature and sculpture trail, which will take this already popular walk to the next level.

Just up the road in Peel Forest you’ll find plenty of native bush walks, some with waterfalls.  You can climb Little Mt Peel, which is known as one of the best day walks in Canterbury.

Timaru is only 35 minutes drive away if coastal scenic walks and penguins are on your bucket list too.

EXPLORE

Peel Forest is full of walking tracks, some with waterfalls, you can even explore on horseback.

Child horse trekking through Peel Forest

Peel Forest Horse Trekking is such an amazing experience.  Even if you have no experience, they will match you with the right horse.  You can take short hour long treks through to multi day adventures.

Compulsory stop at The Green Man afterwards for pizza and craft beer!

Also on the main street, you’ll find the McAtamney Gallery and Design Store. This gallery offers a unique collection of original New Zealand contemporary and historical art and design.
